The Scottish smallpipe is a quiet but vibrant chamber instrument meant for playing indoors. Scottish smallpipes are made in concert pitch so that they will be in tune with other instruments. They are also quite fun to play as a solo instrument.
Traditional Scottish smallpipes were re-discovered in the 1980s, and were blown using a bellows. However, there can be a long learning curve to developing expertise with the bellows, so pipemakers created mouthblown Scottish smallpipes.
The fingering for the Scottish smallpipe is the same as for the Highland pipe.
If you’re looking to get into the Scottish smallpipe sound, you can’t do better than John Walsh’s mouthblown sets, the A-2000 or the D-2000. All sets listed here are always in stock.
John’s smallpipes are vibrant, steady, in tune, and pretty much maintenance-free.
They come with the classic Scottish smallpipe drone configuration: bass drone, tenor drone, and a baritone drone that tunes to E mid-way between the bass and tenor. This makes for a rich and captivating sound.
